At 3:30 PM on December 23, the Macro Agricultural Research Institute (MARI) held the 2023 Outstanding Graduate Student Selection in the A705 Lecture Hall of the Third Comprehensive Building. The event invited Professor You Liangzhi, Director of MARI, Professor Li Xiaoyun from the School of Economics and Management, and Associate Professor Zuo Chengchao from the School of Public Administration to serve as judges.
Professor You Liangzhi delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing that students should not only achieve excellence in academia but also cultivate practical skills, strive for scientific breakthroughs, and become leaders in their fields. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a focus on humanistic care and social responsibility while pursuing personal growth. Academic research, he noted, should not only be about acquiring knowledge but also about applying that knowledge to solve real-world problems. He expressed his anticipation for students to achieve more in the upcoming academic year.
The candidates for the Outstanding Graduate Student Award presented their academic achievements and progress over the past year. Chen Kangdan, a master’s student from the Class of 2022, began by sharing his work on research projects, social practice, and personal interests. He analyzed his development and shortcomings, expressing his commitment to continuous improvement in future research. Chen Yunping, a PhD student from the Class of 2020, recounted her achievements and experiences, highlighting her field research and participation in academic conferences. Guo Yifeng, a master’s student from the Class of 2021, shared his growth at MARI, focusing on his academic and research achievements and involvement in daily activities, and expressed his gratitude to faculty and peers. Wang Chunmeng, another master’s student from the Class of 2021, used her name as a metaphor for her philosophy of “living towards the sun, traveling by light,” encouraging scholars to combine practice with their academic pursuits. Other students, including Wang Hongming, Sun Rui, and Wei Haodong, also showcased their experiences and development in academics, research, and personal life.
Following the presentations, Professor You Liangzhi announced the candidates for the 2023 MARI Outstanding Graduate Student Award. He encouraged all graduate students to continue their efforts, reach new heights, and lay a solid foundation for future achievements by constantly surpassing themselves in their academic journey.
After the selection process, faculty and students participated in a reunion activity filled with engaging games such as “Let’s Hug,” “Werewolf,” and “Who’s the Undercover Agent.” These games fostered a relaxed atmosphere where students demonstrated their quick thinking and reasoning skills, generating continuous laughter and camaraderie. During the tea break, participants enjoyed a quieter moment, engaging in deep conversations about their studies and life, which further strengthened the bonds between teachers and students.
The event was not only a time of shared joy but also an opportunity for heartfelt exchanges. It allowed students to showcase their unique talents and wisdom, while faculty members revealed their more approachable sides. This kind of relaxed and enjoyable interaction narrowed the gap between teachers and students, fostering a greater sense of closeness and mutual understanding.
